Strength-Based Teams

Strength-Based Teams

No leader is good at everything. This reality can be disheartening to an up-and-coming leader who wants to continue to grow and develop into their full potential, but serving leaders see their own limits differently and are therefore able to serve differently. Seeing the truth of our own personal limitations can be tremendously freeing when we realize the power of joining forces to serve with others of complementary strengths.

According to Gallup’s CliftonStrengths research, the strongest teams are made up of leaders with four key areas of strength: Influencing, Strategic Thinking, Relationship Building, and Executing.

Understanding these four main categories for strengths can help you:

  1. Identify your own areas of primary service to the team.
  2. Identify the areas of primary service of others on the team.
  3. Determine the missing gaps in teams strengths in order to recruit new members for the team.
  4. Appreciate the unique DNA of your team when strengths are shared by multiple members of the team.
  5. Lean into certain team members when decisions and tasks are in their primary area of strengths.
  6. Assign roles and responsibilities based team members primary area of service.
  7. Ensure each team member has a voice to ensure diverse perspectives are at the table.

Serving leaders see their own limitations as a catalyst for serving together with others. What areas of strength have you been gifted in? How can you better align your service to those areas? Now take a look around you. Take a moment to thank God for the team members who complement you!
